Smita Aloni: An Indian Artist learnt Phad Paintings from Mr. Kalyan Joshi who is recipient of the president award in India. Now it is almost 20 years she was doing phad paintings. My main aim was to promote this art form. It is not contemporary painting. So developing the interest and understanding is her main task. To create the interest towards this art she tried to reach to people through exhibition, workshops and demonstrations. The colors used in these paintings are prepared at home by grinding natural colored stones. The canvas is also prepared at home by processing white cotton cloth. Due to use of natural colors, there is a limited choice. So the main colors are yellow, orange, green, brown, red, blue and black. Most important element of phad painting is strong and beautiful black lines. Let's listen to her on her incredible artform. Review- Phad is a traditional art form more than 700 years old from the Bhilwara/Shahpura region of Rajasthan, known not only for its vibrant colours, but also the fact that it is accompanied by an oral tradition of rendering folklore. This rendition is performed by Bhopa and Bhopi—priest and his wife from the Rabari tribe. The accompanying instrument is a two string ‘Ravanhatta’. The singing is about the gods, about the heroics of either the local deity Pabuji or Devnarayanji revered by the Gujjar community of camel herders. The Phads, painted like horizontal scrolls with natural colours, also portray folklores, scenes from the Ramayana, and other mythological narratives.
