Deadline to Apply - Sept 20, 2020

What is 21st Century Abstract Mixed Media Painting? Why do we artists paint like this? Mixed Media Virtual Art Exhibition will showcase different artists in a stream of consciousness, visual style, and abstractions. Breathing new life into found objects, collaging different materials to create conversations between texture & content with abstract styles will be Open - Dec 20, 2020. Deadline to Apply - Dec 10, 2020 Looking at the history of abstraction in Mixed Media in painting, we see the approach tackled with many veteran and famous artists through emerging and establishing artists to their canvases. Painting moved from objects recognizable to those no longer until we met our final fringe of the material canvas itself. And, now, here we are, in the 21st century still tackling the canvas but with our intentions very different. We’re no longer advancing a theory, but are engaged in the act of painting in an emotive sense, as therapeutic release, where the artist chooses “inner journey” over outer reality. The common theme is one’s interest in taking that ‘inner journey’ in a self-conscious remove from the outside world, away from the fragmented commercial landscape and indulge in a “meditative, intimate, individual, excavating of self.” Maybe we are still painting with the mixed media in the abstract manner to comment upon our current world of image-saturation. Let's explore into the MIXED MEDIA. The exhibition will feature works across various media to showcase what this new generation of mixed media artists are doing with their work in order to create a space for advancing the public’s awareness and appreciation of this interdisciplinary field. Mixed media artists are routinely pushing the boundaries of materials and concept by exploring new technologies, techniques, aesthetics, and crossing disciplinary borders. So rather than limiting artists to a narrow theme, we seek work which is not afraid to push these boundaries by being inventive in process, technique, material, and concept. Being interested in contemporary art, you have likely seen the words "mixed media" in a gallery or museum without always knowing what that phrase entails. It turns out you're not alone, and I am here to help demystify what those two words really mean...The term “mixed media” is used to describe artworks composed of a combination of different materials - and this could be a wide range of items. While the term itself is relatively new, the practice of combining different media dates back to antiquity. Mixed media isn’t a modern phenomenon. What we consider today to be "mixed media" has developed from less experimental methods and materials-- think Da Vinci mixing pastels with ink or Degas combining pastels and charcoal, to what we see today, which often goes beyond traditional artistic materials to include unconventional materials and objects - from aluminum to zippers to a large installation, anything goes!Because it is a continuously evolving form, mixed media allows for a liberty of expression, and often emphasizes process as much as product.Mixed media allows artists to continue to push the boundaries of art through the use of non-traditional media. The term captures a wide range of definitions. If you are curious what elements make up a certain artwork, be sure to ask the curator for details. We ART4You Gallery is calling all international artists to apply for our new upcoming international exhibition, Mixed Media - A Little Of This, A Little Of That - Mixed Media Art Exhibition.
